Serge Prokofiev (DR)

An initiative of The Serge Prokofiev Association in partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music and the BBC Philharmonic, the Manchester Prokofiev 2003 Festival celebrates the music and life of Prokofiev to mark the half-centenary of his death. It offers concerts with the BBC Philharmonic, the Hallé and Manchester Camerata, and a Symposium Weekend (7-10 Feb) at The Royal Northern College of Music. Opening with a keynote address delivered by Sir Peter Ustinov, the Symposium includes concerts, recitals, an international conference, launches of new publications, illustrated talks and discussions, and a dinner in the presence of the composer's family with a public address by Sir Edward Downes.
The Conference (Prokofiev and 20th-Century Culture) focuses on Prokofiev's life and work among Russian émigré circles in Paris and in Soviet Russia. It will explore Prokofiev's co-operation with other art forms from literature to dance and film, putting his own contribution into a broad artistic, social and political context.
