As part of the worldwide Prokofiev 2003 celebrations Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton presents an important six-concert series this Autumn based around the composer's nine completed piano sonatas, one of the great sets of instrumental music of the twentieth century. The series, which begins on Tuesday 30 September with a recital by distinguished Russian pianist Dmitri Alexeev, is the only complete professional survey of the works in the UK in this anniversary year and one of only three globally.
     The sonatas will be performed alongside other works by Prokofiev as well as music by composers who influenced him or were his contemporaries: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Schubert, Ravel, Debussy, Koechlin, Haydn and Shostakovich. Integral to the series are four pre-concert talks given by eminent speakers, each of whom will be looking at a different aspect of the composer.
