A ‘Smart Dinner’
Hollywood, Rouben Mamoulian, and the Prokofievs
Pilar Castro Kiltz
Prokofiev travelled to the United States for the final time in early 1938, performing a series of recitals of his works and, towards the end of his stay, meeting with Hollywood film producers. Upon his return to the Soviet Union, his (and his wife Lina’s) travel privileges were rescinded. The delightful memories of his time in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles, faded with the somber realization that he would never again see those cities nor avail himself of any opportunities discovered in America. The Soviet musical diplomat had lost his freedom.
