Rare is the article on Prokofiev which does not quote from, or refer to, the composer’s autobiography, in its “short” or “long” version. The Soviet editions are out of print and hard to come by and the English editions are abridged versions of the original. As a result, with the exception of a few academics who have access to the Soviet editions, few people are acquainted with this work. Given that Prokofiev’s autobiography remains the richest reference document on his life, this article has been written to clarify the nature and content of the two versions, and their circumstances. 8
