By way of Le Pas d’acier Prokofiev and Iakulov’s Ursiniol comes to the stage
Stephen PRESS

On the evenings of 7-9 April 2005, Prokofiev’s Le Pas d’acier (Stal’noi skok, The Steel Step) once again sounded forth in its original role, supporting a stunning ballet production on the stage of Princeton University’s Berlind Theatre before enthusiastic audiences. Media coverage was plentiful, and production photos even graced the pages of The New York Times. The ballet was performed by 22 students from the Programme in Theatre and Dance and the Princeton University Orchestra under its Music Director, Michael Pratt. More than a revival (the original production was never recorded), it was a world première: a source-based recreation of Serge Prokofiev and Georgii Iakulov’s 1925 machine-age ballet.
