"I was born on 23 April 1891 in the village of Sontsovka, Dnepropetrovsk region, in the family of an agronomist.
I began to play the piano at age 4, and began to compose music at age 5. I received my initial musical training from my mother, then from Glier under the direction of Taneev. At age 9 I wrote my children's opera The Giant, at age 11 an orchestral symphony and an opera based on Pushkin's Feast in Time of Plague. At age 13 I entered the St. Petersburg Conservatoire in the class of theory and composition (led by Liadov, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Vitol')" . . . (26 October 1938) BACK
