Indeed, when you are surfing the Web, or using Google's search for the information containing the keyword <Prokofiev>, you would obtain the long list of the suggested links that correspond to your criteria but among them there is a number of sites which have nothing to do with the composer Sergei Prokofiev.
So you can find all kinds of surprises, some of them pleasant, some not interesting at all. Here it is necessary to remind that the main law on Web concerning the registration of the domain name is "first come - first served". Even the famous personalities or brands often face many difficulties (if not a total failure...) when trying to get back their own name.
A species happily thriving in the jungles of the World Wide Web is represented by companies specialized in searching and/or creating the names of value and in their registration as domain names - only to resell them later at much higher prices. Needless to say that the domain names containing the simplest and most explicit words, being the names of celebrities or well known brands, became sure values and their price is beyond the reach of simple mortals. This kind of business remains flourishing owing to such resale practices and in spite of a more and more important reduction in the words and names still available.

LAS VEGAS -- In the second-ever live auction of domain names, Monicker.com scored big with the sale of Sex.net for $450,000.
Example 2 (sales by Giraffe.co.uk)
taste.co.uk to Sainsbury's for £110,000 plus VAT
three.co.uk to Hutchison for £102,000 plus VAT
(We can recommend an interesting article "Speculating one domain names".
Navigating in the virtual world under the flag of "Prokofievland", I found many very interesting sites, but I also chanced upon several sites which had nothing - or almost nothing - to do with the composer Sergei Prokofiev. The name of Prokofiev did not escape the speculations; it is still for sale under some attractive names waiting to be purchased from Registrars. Of course, Sergei Prokofiev is not the only one to go under this name and forename - there exist many of his namesakes who have a full right to own a corresponding domain name.
Now I invite you to have a look at what one can find on Web at the present moment.
No relationship either with the composer, or with the music. The only funny coincidence is that the owner of the domain is also a full namesake, but that of the younger son of the composer - Oleg Sergeevich Prokofiev!
It is the site of a Russian Web Design studio rightfully named "Prokofiev-Studio". I don't know whether the studio is prosperous, but the examples in its portfolio as well as the site itself do not inspire too much.
Once again, no relationship with the composer, but now the pop music is brought to the fore. Maybe it is merely a site of a fan of ELO, Leonard Cohen, Velvet Underground and similar TaTu Russians girls among others? No, it is so only at first sight: indeed, by clicking any name on the entry page you let the cat out of the bag - the link immediately presents you the page of the search results for the clicked name! To put it differently - the list of the sites concerning the name you are interested in. Here we have to do with the site that purely and shamelessly squats on the Prokofiev's name without any valid reason.
A sober and correct site made by a pro. Its purpose is to one give a number of links towards various sites related to Sergei Prokofiev and his work, what is rather useful. The links in the main menu have something to do with "music":
Sheet music, musical instruments, instrument insurance, music equipment.
If one looks a little closer, he/she will discover that the site is owned by the British company The Giant Games Centre. Among the company's other sites are the sites being the perfect clones of prokofiev.co.uk, with such names as berlioz.co.uk, caravaggio.co.uk, dvorak.co.uk, haydn.co.uk, stravinsky.co.uk, paganini.co.uk, pushkin.co.uk, chopin.co.uk or rachmaninov.co.uk and dozens of others.
If one keeps looking, it turns out that The Giant Games Centre is the owner of the company Giraffe.co.uk (incidentally, Giraffe.co.uk is the trade name of Giant Games Ltd), which is reseller of the domain names that either have been created by the company itself or acquired by it previously! (See example 2 above). One can read the following:
Giraffe.co.uk is an internet business, established almost 10 years ago. We specialise in domain names, particularly TLAs and generics.
We own a number of domain names; some of which we develop as sites in their own right, others of which we are interested in either selling or leasing".
When one print this address he/she is redirected here.
This site has nothing special, if not some apparent musical coincidences, no direct relationship with Prokofiev, even if the subtitle "Advertising campaign dedicated to Prokofiev" is present. If one shorten the address up to:
http://sedoparking.com he/she would arrive here and, by clicking «Accueil» one would find oneself here.
And now, here is our long-awaited reward:
"Sedo is the professional marketplace dedicated to the domain names. More than 350.000 members of the whole world buy and sell their domains by our intermediary".
That's it. Let's try to conduct an experiment by putting into the frame proposed by prokofiev.de the word "Prokofiev". There are the results:
prokofiev.com on sale
prokofiev.info already registered
prokofiev.eu already registered
prokofiev.biz already registered
prokofiev.net already registered
prokofiev.org already registered
sergeiprokofiev.com make offer
The line #1 confirms the Domain Name reseller status of the above-mentioned domain's owner.
No relationship with Prokofiev, but the presence of a directNIC logo brings us here what confirms that prokofiev.eu is the property of DirectNIC - the Domain Name reseller.
You are immediately redirected here.
Naxos is a musical label. Everything could be normal, if not for the fact that Prokofiev's name does not belong to Naxos but the domain name does.
An image in full screen with the name "prokofiev.net" and a dull "Hier entsteht in Kürze das Projekt prokofiev.net" ("Here the prokofiev.net project will be created soon"). The message in the bottle that floats against the blue background of the screen says nothing more. The site can remain in this state for eternity... You cannot know what will be the contents of the project; you have only an e-mail address to ask for the information, that's all, folks. Still, a small suspect detail: the owner of this domain name goes under the name "Prokofiev"! So, everything here is correct - one of the names at least.
Needless to present this site to anyone who reads this page! It is the absolute must! The work of Sugi Sorensen from California, a devoted fan of Prokofiev and a professional computer specialist (aka Defender of Liberty, VP of Engineering, Systems Engineer, Programmer, Small Business Owner, Web Designer, Consultant & Editor, as he presented himself on his Website) who conceived an enormous site which counts in its databases the information on some 935 recordings of the works of Prokofiev with comments, its catalogue, a gallery of the photographs, interviews etc. The main part of the site which makes it "so alive" is its very active and varied Forum. Every Prokofiev's fan who respects himself must to visit this site! If that will be your first visit, it surely will not be the last one.
A coincidence, once again. Nothing to do with Sergei Prokofiev, but the owner of the domain name and of the site is a guy named Alexei Prokofiev.
This site made in Russian language only, with its rather primitive design, is an enormous lumber room filled in bulk, full of hundreds of jokes, funny texts, aphorisms, funny and not-so-funny cartoons, as well as video clips pulled out from various sources. All this stuff is approximately classified by categories.
Change of spelling. (This subject is discussed in the first issue of the "Three Oranges Journal" dated January, 2001 where an article "Getting it right!" is published). The owner is Katherine Prokofieff, the artist who created a number of paintings and portraits in colored and ornamental style. Thus, the pictorial gallery of the site is well supplied. Her bio, her texts are presented in several languages (she writes for "Relikviya" review - the first Russian-language professional magazine on museums, museum techniques, conservation & restoration - and also cooperates with the "Empire of Art" - an international arts magazine).
With same spelling as the previous one, this site is a mere list of links only very moderately connected to Prokofiev. If we have a look at the code source of the site we would find in the keywords list the following: "domainregistration, buy and sell domains, domainauction, domains, domainname, domainmarket, appraisals, Domainauktion, Domainmarkt, Domainhandel" what explains the origin of the site. When going a little farther into the code source (description of style sheet) we will discover our friends we have already met in other circumstances. It is sedoparking.com - hi, do you remember me? - the site of the Domain Name reseller who takes charge of prokofiev.de.
Everything said above undoubtedly confirms that the domain names of the Web sites are the goods similar to any others, and that in the virtual world the real trade exists (with real expenses and sometimes vertiginous prices, with speculations and thefts closely copied from the everyday life). There exist also honest and serious people, passionate persons, who do not look for personal profit. They are less numerous, but to meet them on Web is a true happiness. BACK
The information used in this article is accessible for everyone. In order to obtain it, we have performed no special tricks nor made special efforts. The code source of every site is accessible by the menu of your browser, and if you want to know who is the owner of a domain name you can simply visit this site.
All the information regarding registered domains or domains on sale contained in the present article is given as on January 2007, when it was written.
